2020 was a weird year. While a lot of us spent a majority of it in sweatsuits, there were still a lot of great fashion trends – despite the pandemic. These are my top 10 trends and staples of 2020.
1. Camel coat
I’ve always loved a camel coat moment. They’re so timeless and classy and can be dressed up or down. I picked up a new one from J. Crew this year and have been loving it. It just came back in stock and has already sold out in some sizes, so order it quickly if you want it! I linked some of my other favorites below.
2. Veja sneakers
I’ve wanted Veja sneakers for a long time. I love a good white sneaker, but I also love the look of an added pop of color. I picked a pair up from Nordstrom when I had a gift card and have been loving them ever since. They do run about a half size big in my opinion. I think white sneakers are a year round essential – they amp up the look of a summer tan when worn with shorts and add a casual yet chic touch to a pair of jeans and a sweater in the winter.
3. Bombas socks
Bouncing off of my last favorite, I discovered Bombas socks this year – not only are they the most cushiony, comfortable socks (and perfect for breaking in leather sneakers), but they give back to the community. With each pair you buy, a pair is donated. Veja sneakers have a stiff leather tongue that needs to be broken in, so I’ve been loving the Bombas quarter socks. These ones match my Vejas perfectly! Their ankle socks are great for wearing with running shoes. Bombas can be purchased directly from their site (they have pretty fast shipping!) and also from Nordstrom and Athleta.
4. Chelsea boots
The shoes I’ve been wearing practically non-stop since fall began are my chelsea boots. I love that mine are water resistant because I can wear them in the rain or snow without worrying about them. Chelsea boots with a lug sole are great because they’re a bit more casual looking but can still be dressed up – they have sort of a utilitarian look, but in the best way. These waterproof ones by Sam Edelman are great too.
5. Graphic tees
I’ve always loved graphic tees, but I feel like they were even bigger this year – literally and figuratively. The look of an oversized graphic tee was definitely a big trend in 2020. My favorite graphic tees are from Urban Outfitters and Free People, but I’ve seen some gems at plenty of other stores – this one was my most worn of 2020. Graphic sweatshirts also had their moment – nothing is cozier than a big, oversized sweatshirt, and a cute design makes it even better. Throw a white turtleneck underneath for extra trendiness.
6. Shirt jackets (shackets)
2020 was the year of the shacket! If you follow any bloggers, you’d have seen how big shackets became this fall. They’re basically oversized and thicker button down shirts or flannels that are worn as a light jacket, and they’ve been flying off the shelves so fast that it’s hard to even link them. H&M and Zara have great ones. I love the sherpa ones from American Eagle as well.
7. Levi’s
I love denim, but I love denim under $100 even more. I pretty much wear Levi’s year round – shorts in the summer and jeans the rest of the year. Their wedgie fit jeans are amazing – they flatter the butt and hug the waist without being too tight in the leg (this is my fav wash). I literally will only wear their 501 or Ribcage shorts in the summer now because they’re the only denim shorts I know will fit and hold up well in the wash, whereas brands like American Eagle tend to fall apart over time. It may take a few tries to find out what your perfect size is, but it’s well worth it to have amazing denim from a classic American brand.
8. High rise athleisure
High rise leggings, yoga pants and shorts are a godsend. I can’t believe I even spent money on regular rise Lululemon back in the day. These are my favorite affordable high-rise leggings. They really are amazing quality. Lululemon Aligns are still my go-to leggings, though, and these Splits 59 yoga pants are my favorite “flare leggings” (as the kids call them). High rise leggings and pants are just so much more flattering and make me feel confident enough to workout in a sports bra or crop top, which is a bonus if you’re someone who sweats easily like I do.
9. Faux-leather leggings & pants
I’ve always loved the look of leather leggings, and I’m glad to see leather leggings and pants are a big-time trend this season! I love my Spanx faux leather leggings. They do run a tad small, so if you’re between sizes I’d recommend sizing up. I love these crocodile leather ones and I just ordered the patent leather! I’ve also really been into the straight leg leather pant look recently. These are a great affordable option.
10. Gold jewelry
Gold jewelry has never really been “out,” but I definitely think gold jewelry (particularly hoops) had a moment this year. I have worn these chunky gold hoops nonstop, and they’re so CHEAP. These huggies are also a fav for day-to-day wear. They haven’t tarnished on me at all, even when I wear them in the shower. For gold bracelets I’ve been loving Beadzzbyz! Zoe is awesome and started her brand on Instagram. Her bracelets are well priced, especially since they can be worn in the shower!
